چکیده

In this paper we develop procedures for setting the basestock levels for a buffer in a supply chain subject to uncertainty in the demands. Our work is motivated by experience with an industrial partner in the electronics industry who was subject to the following difficulties: short product cycles, a complex supply chain with multiple suppliers and long production leadtimes, and a very competitive environment. The combination of these factors produced a paucity of demand data and a significant exposure to risk, in the form of either excessive inventory or shortages. We consider a buffer evolving over a finite time horizon. For t = 1, 2, . . . , T , the quantity xt denotes the inventory at the start of period t (possibly negative to indicate a shortage) with x1 given. We also have a (per unit) inventory holding cost ht, a backlogging cost bt, and a production cost ct. The dynamics during period t work out as follows:

Setting Basestock Levels in Multiproduct Systems with Setups and Random Yield

This paper shows how to set basestock levels in a multiproduct system with setups and random yield. The system is represented by a polling model and the inventory level of each product is controlled using a basestock policy. When the queue is empty, the inventory level is equal to the basestock level, thus the server will continue to serve the queue until it is empty. If the capacity of the que...

Multi-Echelon Production/Inventory Systems: Optimal Policies, Heuristics, and Algorithms

The theory on multi-echelon production/inventory systems is a core theory within supply chain management. It provides useful insights for design of supply chains and may be used for tactical and operational planning decisions. The multi-echelon theory started with the seminal paper of Clark and Scarf in 1960. In this tutorial, we describe for which systems optimal policies are known, which key ...

Dynamic programming approach to adjustable robust optimization

In this paper we consider the adjustable robust approach to multistage optimization, for which we derive dynamic programming equations. We also discuss this from a point of view of risk averse stochastic programming. As an example we consider a robust formulation of the classical inventory model and show that, similar to the risk neutral case, a basestock policy is optimal.
